Fusion VR: Bridging Worlds is a Virtual Reality experience that combines the culture of the UK and Hong Kong in a cross-culture reality.
A group of 6 students from different disciplines at Teesside University including myself visited Hong Kong for 1 month and worked with a group of students from Hong Kong Baptist University.
My experience in Hong Kong was nothing short of incredible, from exploring a city on the other side of the world to developing a VR game experience with some amazing people.
After we returned to the UK we continued to work on the project for a further 2 months over the summer and then presented the game on a panel at the Animex Game Festival 2023
My Role:
I served as a technical designer however due to the nature of the project I had many different roles and tasks. My core responsibilities were building the game mechanics with VR functionality. Developing mechanics to be used in virtual reality required me to come at it from a different angle as I needed to consider how something would be interacted with and how information would be relayed to the player from inside the headset. This allowed me to broaden my skills when it comes to communicating aspects of the game to the player.
Working with other students on the other side of the world had its challenges that required new skills and workflows to overcome. Being able to adapt to other people's time zones was crucial to having a successful development cycle. Keeping active on the project management tools we used enabled us to have 2 teams in completely different time zones work on the game simultaneously.
My Contributions:
-
Core mechanics design & implementation for each season
-
Working directly with the artists within the team to help achieve our visual goal.
-
Weekly Meetings to establish progress and goals
